Anyone for coffee?

If it’s a Nespresso, you’re partaking in one of the world’s fastest coffee-growing segments. It accounts for 20 to 40 percent of ground coffee sales in the European coffee market, totaling 17 billion USD. Owned by Nestle, the product originated in Switzerland. It features machines that brew coffee from capsules of coffee grounds. It was patented in 1996.

Nespresso capsules are made of aluminum foil.  When the capsule is put into the machine, the top of the capsule is pierced. Some machines make a single large hole, and some others make a number of smaller holes. After the coffee is made, the spent capsule has to be removed from the holder; on some machines this is automated.

Nespresso was first introduced by Eric Favre in markets in Switzerland. In 1988, with the contribution of Jean Paul Gaillard, the product became well known in the market. The Nespresso machines were first sold out in Switzerland under the agreement of Tumix firm, then with the following firms: Krups, Magimiz, Alessi, and Philips.

It was reported that Nespresso sales have been rising at an estimated 30% per year over the past 10 years and more than 20 billion capsules have been sold since 2000 at a current selling price equivalent to about 0.43 to 0.62 USD per capsule.

Social media, such as Facebook, and celebrities, such as George Clooney, have been used to promote Nespresso.  The brand’s current slogan is “What else?” There are continued promotional campaigns of the Nespresso brand all over the world.

Both the Nespresso machine and its capsules can be obtained from Nespresso stores, mail order, or many other consumer appliance stores. Nespresso offers different flavors: caramel, gingerbread, almond, and more.
