McDaniel College Budapest Opening Convocation, Fall 2011

by Felix Timmers

Fresh faces back from a long summer break: students and faculty met each other again on September 5th. The Opening Convocation started off with the presentation of 20 international countries. Flags of diverse nations were carried into the Assembly Hall, from Hungary to Venezuela, from Germany to Israel. This was followed by a welcome speech from Dean Frenyó. Then President of McDaniel College Roger Casey took to the podium and delivered a remarkable speech, to say the least. With a number of jokes, he managed to lift up the spirit of the Budapest campus of McDaniel College to start a fresh new year. The president’s knowledge of the latest technology and hip hop probably exceeded that of a typical student.

The ceremony was followed by a bus ride through the city towards the Chain Bridge where a boat was waiting for the students and faculty members to arrive. The river cruise was one of the highlights of the day. With good weather, an uplifted spirit, wine, beer, hot dogs and sandwiches it was bound to be a good time, and it indeed was. The boat trip took up to about two hours and certainly expanded social contacts and completed a great day of introduction for students new to the campus. Some students even continued afterwards, toasting to the new semester well into the night.
