May the 4th be with you! International Star Wars day

By Federica Simone

Star Wars fans all over the world, young kids who recently came to love the saga, and people who loved the saga since the day of the first release, be happy it’s STAR WARS DAY!!

Every year on May the 4th, people from all over the world get together and celebrate their beloved saga. Last year here in Budapest many people dressed up as storm troopers and walked around Vaci Utca for the joy of little kids, curiosity of tourists tourists and puzzled old people. However this year the celebrations will be big inDisney’s Hollywood Studios. The Mickey Mouse company, which recently bought the franchise, (as reported on the starwarsblog.starwars.com) will host month-long Star Wars Weekends special event (which begins May 17). It will include many Star Wars-themed limited special entertainments; the lucky people who will attend might even find themselves sitting next to Chewbacca or take part to a special edition ofJedi Training Academy and get ready for final showdown with the Empire.

This special day, which was a fan-proclaimed holiday, has a very interesting history. If you had to guess, you probably would just think that Uncle George was in a puny mood during an interview and created the “may the forth” joke.  Well, weird enough that would be wrong.  If we have such a day is definitely because of Margaret Thatcher. Yes, you read well, we need to thank the iron lady and her party. But what does the Iron Lady as to do with Star Wars? Even though many people consider her as evil as Sith, the phrase was not coined because of that but because she came into office on May the 4th 1979, day which her party placed an advertisement in The London Evening News that said “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations.” Since then fans from all over the world started using the phrase and adopted May the 4th as one of their special days of the year.

There are many ways to celebrate this special day! Personally I always throw a little marathon and wear my super cool storm trooper shirt, but this year I want to spice it up a little and so should you! Some blue milk just like Aunt Beru made, or maybe some Death Star Popcorn balls can make your marathon even cooler. Or for those who belong to the creative side, can challenge their friends to create Chewbacca sock puppets or Master Yoda puppets! Happy Star Wars Day humans, Wookiees, Gungans and everyone else! Don’t forget to celebrate it properly with your friends and family, and maybe even introduce your silly girlfriend who never watched a single movie to this wonderful story.  May the 4th (and the Force) be with you!
