Passion, intensity, goals and thrills: this is the Champions League, our oasis in the boring routine of the working week. We’ve all been there, you come home tired, open a beer and switch on the TV and start watching the games. At the moment, UCL is still in the early group stages and it never fails to cheer up boring and dull Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
So far the group stage has already given us some spectacular moments in the first week of fixtures. In the first group, Manchester United fans found a reason to drink dry their pints with joy when their team beat Bayern Leverkusen without difficulties. The game finished 4-2 for Man U: Rooney, who was in great shape and scored twice (22’,70’); and Van Persie (59’) and Valencia (79’) scored the other two goals.
Group B was very exciting. Real Madrid gave a stunning performance against the Istanbul side Galatasaray, by demolishing them 6-1. It is remarkable that in this match Cristiano Ronaldo scored 3 goals and surpassed Ferenc Puskas in goals. This hat-trick took his total to an incredible 206 goals in 204 games compared to the 1960s icon that has a score of 205 goals with the same number of games. The second game, less exciting that the previous one, saw F.C Copenhagen draw with Juventus, 1-1. Of course Lionel Messi could not let Cristiano Ronaldo steal the limelight of the UCL week; he scored his own hat-trick against Ajax, leading his team to a 4-0 victory. The other game of Group H was a much suffered one: AC Milan put a lot of effort against Celtic, suffering through most of the game. However the game finished 2-0 for the Rossoneri.
However, the big surprise of the week happened ar Stamford Bridge ground where Chelsea lost against Basel. The Londoners collected another loss, which even though Jose Mourihnio took the responsibility of the defeat, it certainly didn’t calm down Chelsea’s owner Roman Ambramovich, who –according to the British tabloids- is not too pleased with the not so special Special One’s unlucky start of the season and poor results.
Next week, 1st and 2nd of October, there will be the more exciting games to follow. All eyes will most probably on Man. City vs Bayern Munich, the biggest game of this round. Juventus vs Galatasaray also promises to be an interesting game, with both teams who want shine in the international scene and prove that last week is now behind and they are ready to win.
